The year is 1899, and scientific illustrator Sonia Wilson is left without work, prospects, or hope following her father's death. When the reclusive Dr. Halder offers her a position illustrating his vast insect collection, Sonia jumps at the chance to relocate to his isolated North Carolina manor house.
Upon arriving, Sonia faces eerie occurrences in the surrounding woods and unsettling rumors of "blood thieves". Teaming up with the housekeeper and a local healer, she discovers Halder's entomological research involves parasitic maggots that burrow into human flesh. As Sonia uncovers the fate of her predecessor, she realizes she must put an end to Halder's monstrous experiments before becoming his next subject.
